Volunteers are the Book Project!

Organizational Structure

The Book Project is incorporated in the District of Columbia as a non-profit 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization under the umbrella of the World Bank Family Network (WBFN).  All members of the Book Project are volunteers and are associated with the World Bank Group as employees, retirees or spouses/children of employees.

The Book Project is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board consists of two Co-Chairs and six other members who are responsible for coordinating donations and shipments and sponsoring periodic book fairs.

The World Bank Family Network (WBFN) supports the book Project by assisting in organizational and office needs, by liaising with the essential World Bank Group partners, mainly the Global Corporate Solutions (GCS), by recruiting volunteers among the newcomers to HQ, by connecting with members living in Country Offices who can follow up on deliveries, and by constantly advocating on its behalf with Senior Management so the Book Projects keeps addressing literacy needs around the world.

  • The World Bank’s Global Corporate Solutions (GCS ) arranges for:Identifying/Contracting Freight Vendors for shipping containers via Mail Management and Mail Strategic;
  • Obtaining relevant documentation for the shipments by the above;
  • Providing support for preparing the shipment including finding pallets and shrink wrapping before departure to Landover;
  • Transporting container from JB3 to Landover and Baltimore Port;
  • Transporting shipment from port of departure to port of entry for recipient country;
  • Transporting large donations from metro county schools to Sterling, VA warehouse for semi-permanent storage;
  • Providing storage for books from the Sterling Warehouse to JB3 Loading Dock and then on to JB3-105 Packing Room of the Book Project as needed;
  • Repairing and maintaining physical facilities housing the Book Project Office and Packing Room; vacuuming, sweeping, phone repairs, computer repairs, emptying trash/recycling of non-usable printed material;
  • Assisting with ordering packing boxes;
  • Assisting with Book Fairs – providing and setting up tables, shelves, chairs at the venue.

Public and private schools are the Book Project’s principal donors; the Book Project also receives some books from individuals and other organizations.
