Project Haiti—French Books!

We have all been horrified at the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.

We have all been horrified at the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. We have all watched as various disaster agencies have arrived to help pull people from the rubble, provide medical help, set up shelters and feed the survivors. The emergency response has, as so often in natural disasters, been tremendous; people have given generously to provide the relief so urgently needed.

As in other countries and other natural disasters the ‘emergency’ will be over; the agencies will leave and the generosity will subside. But Haiti, perhaps more than most countries, needs more than emergency relief; Haiti will need continuing help, in every aspect of life in the country.

Members of WBFN have been asking what our response to Haiti’s needs should be. The EC recognized that within WBFN there is an organization that can make a contribution to life in Haiti after the emergency. The Book Project already has the systems and mechanism for schools in Haiti to receive books. The EC has, therefore, nominated the Book Project as the organization for members to direct their support to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

It will take time for schools in the affected parts of Haiti to rebuild and reopen. This is time that we can put to good use. We are asking WBFN members to contribute now so that we are ready when the schools in Haiti are ready! Haiti is a French speaking country, so:

Book Project Haiti will need donations of French school textbooks
Book Project Haiti will need money to buy French school textbooks

WBFN Members can

  • Make cash donations via the Credit Union where a separate account has been set up for donations to ‘Book Project Haiti’
  • Collect school textbooks in FRENCH and deliver them to the Book Project.
  • At the Book Project, we have a reliable partner in Haiti to help us identify schools. The partner will advise us when schools are open, when they have somewhere to put and use the books and ensure the books reach the intended recipients.
  • When we have collected the books, we will need volunteers to help pack. We will let you know when we can begin.
